Title:Creating "Shape Box" lyrics

Date: 9/15/201X

Grade Level: 4th

Materials

  • Overhead projector
  • Transparency of original "Shape Box" lyrics
  • Transparencies of lyrics written by last year's students
  • White paper

Purpose

To review the properties of polygons with the integration of writing in order to help meet the St. Charles Community School District Fourth Grade Goal of "understanding the concept of measurement by use of angles and shapes."

Objective

TLW demonstrate their knowledge of polygons by contributing to the creation of four lyrics that correctly describe/define their group's given shape with 4 out of 4 lyrics correct considered mastery.

Procedure:

Attention-getter

  • Students will be able to listen to the "Shape Box" lyrics again in order to reiterate the beat and melody.

Activities

  • T will then inform the s's that they will be creating, in their groups, their own four lyrics to the song.
  • T will place overheads of last year's created lyrics on the overhead to serve as a model.
  • T will have students sing the lyrics on the overhead. T will read them aloud.
  • T will then say that the lyrics have to describe their given shape/term and also have to name their shape/term within the four lyrics.
  • T will say that they will turn in one set of lyrics to the T, so one person should be the recorder for their team.
  • T will give the s's 20 minutes to work.
  • T will say that they do not have to rhyme, but they perhaps might want to sing it out loud to make sure it would fit in the melody of the song.
  • T will assign the following terms to each group:
    • Hawaii - Quadrangle
    • West - Regular Polygon
    • Southwest - Rectangles
    • Midwest - Perpendicular lines
    • Alaska - Polygon
    • Northeast - Concave polygon
    • Southeast - Parallelogram

Closure/Review

    • T will assess the lyrics and look for errors. If any occur, T will ask group to correct them. T will then type out lyrics and the next day the students will be able to sing their own lyrics.

Assessment

TL demonstrated their knowledge of polygons by contributing to the creation of four lyrics that correctly describe/define their group's given shape with 4 out of 4 lyrics correct considered mastery.

Diversity

Each student is able to contribute and apply their own knowledge of polygons and geometric terms in order to create a lyric that will correctly define their given shape or term.

Teacher Focus: Pacing, giving clear directions.
